About Panda Express
Panda Express – Chula Vista Location
Panda Express at 1820 Main Ct, Chula Vista, CA 91911 represents a cornerstone of American Chinese fast-casual dining, bringing decades of culinary innovation and entrepreneurial excellence to the San Diego area. As part of the world’s largest Chinese food fast-food chain, this location continues a legacy that began in Southern California and has since expanded to become a global phenomenon, serving millions of customers annually with authentic flavors adapted for contemporary American palates[1][2].
The story of Panda Express is fundamentally a tale of immigrant entrepreneurship and family dedication. Founded by Andrew Cherng in partnership with his father, Master Chef Ming-Tsai Cherng, the brand emerged from humble beginnings when the family immigrated to the United States in 1966[1]. What started as Panda Inn, an upscale sit-down Chinese restaurant in Pasadena, California in 1973, evolved into something far more revolutionary when Andrew and his wife Peggy recognized an opportunity to bring fast-casual Chinese cuisine to mainstream America[2][5]. The first Panda Express opened in October 1983 at the Glendale Galleria food court, a pivotal moment that transformed how Americans experienced Chinese food[2][3].
The Chula Vista location operates within this proven business model that has made Panda Express a household name. The restaurant specializes in fast-casual Chinese cuisine, offering customers quick service without compromising on quality or flavor. The menu draws inspiration from Mandarin and Sichuan culinary traditions, presenting dishes that appeal to both adventurous diners and those new to Chinese cuisine[6]. Early on, popular offerings included moo shu pork and combination dishes featuring multiple proteins, reflecting the restaurant’s philosophy of making Chinese food accessible to diverse demographics[1].
One of Panda Express’s most iconic contributions to American dining is Orange Chicken, created by Chef Andy Kao in 1987[6]. This signature dish exemplifies the brand’s approach to innovation—taking traditional Chinese flavors and adapting them for American tastes. The restaurant’s commitment to evolution extends beyond menu items; it encompasses operational excellence and technological advancement. Peggy Cherng’s background in engineering and software design gave Panda Express a competitive advantage in the 1980s, making the company an early adopter of technology in the restaurant industry[5].
The Chula Vista location at +1 619-656-8888 welcomes customers seeking convenient, quality Chinese fast food with health-conscious options. This reflects the modern evolution of Panda Express, which has expanded beyond traditional mall food courts to include standalone locations, drive-thru restaurants, and campus dining facilities[2]. By 1993, the chain had grown to over 100 locations, and by the 2000s, it had achieved remarkable milestones including opening its 1,000th location and reaching $1 billion in annual revenue[6].
What distinguishes Panda Express is not merely its food quality but its corporate values. The company introduced profit-sharing for general managers in 1983, an unprecedented move that became a cornerstone of its culture[6]. This commitment to sharing success with employees reflects the Cherng family’s philosophy of giving back to communities. Through Panda Cares, the company’s philanthropic arm established in the 1990s, Panda Express dedicates resources to health and education initiatives for underserved youth[6].
The Chula Vista Panda Express serves as a local manifestation of this global success story, providing the community with reliable, flavorful Chinese fast-casual dining rooted in authentic culinary traditions yet adapted for contemporary American preferences.

They are so slow!!!! My god I placed an online order and by the time I received it in the drive thru it was already cold! I didnt even leave the drive thru line yet and my food was already not at temperature! UPDATE: Panda wants to reply on here, telling me to reach out to them but I already did. They want to respond on here but not respond to my formal complain on the app? Make that make sense!

I have only ordered from here a few times and the food is semi-decent. Egg rolls are good. Orange Chicken is actually fantastic and I usually avoid it at restaurants. But my problem is with the green bean chicken and cream cheese ragoons. The Green Beans were frozen/ not fully cooked and the ragoons were burnt with no cream cheese. The rice too was... hard...

Went to Panda Express on the drive thru, there was only around 5 or 6 cars and waited over 20 minutes. After waiting for so long when I got home and saw my plate I had asked for string bean chicken and apparently they only had string bean because my plate had only one piece of chicken. Really discounted and it’s not the first time I have a bad experience here but this has been the worst. Spent over $30 on my two plates and was served by Roze.
